Is the Edinburgh Fringe a comedy festival?

The short answer

Not strictly. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is an open-access arts festival held over three weeks every August, spanning theatre, dance, circus, music and more. Comedy is its largest section, though: the Fringe Society's 2026 programme listed 1,401 comedy shows out of 3,649, or 38.4 per cent, ahead of theatre with 1,025.

An arts festival first

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society calls the Fringe three weeks of the performing arts in Edinburgh each August, with every kind of live performance in it: theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children's shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events. It is open access, and the Society takes no part in vetting what is staged, so the balance of genres comes from what artists and venues choose to register rather than from a curator. The 80th Edinburgh Festival Fringe runs from 6 to 30 August 2027.

How big comedy is

Comedy is the largest section by a wide margin. At the 2026 programme launch the Fringe Society counted 3,649 shows across 258 venues, of which 1,401 were comedy (38.4 per cent), 1,025 theatre (28.1 per cent) and 388 music (10.6 per cent); children's shows numbered 127. A year earlier the 2025 launch counted 1,214 comedy shows out of 3,352 (36.2 per cent), against 930 theatre shows. In both years more than a third of the Edinburgh Fringe programme was comedy.

What that means for a visitor

For a comedy fan the Edinburgh Fringe works like a very large comedy festival inside an arts festival. The Fringe Society's central box office offers tickets to every show on the Fringe, comedy or not, so a visitor can put stand-up, theatre and circus in the same day from one programme. What the Society does not do is pick or rank the comedy: individual venues choose their own line-ups, and the Fringe Society selects no shows itself. Its own guide warns artists that thousands of shows compete for the same audience.
