How do comedians get into a comedy festival?

The short answer

It depends on the festival. Most curated comedy festivals take open submissions: a comic sends a video of a live set, usually with a fee, and a panel or committee chooses the bill. Some festivals also book acts by invitation or run contests, and fringes such as Edinburgh and Brighton take anyone who registers with a venue.

Tape, fee and a panel

Raleigh Comedy Festival in North Carolina asks for an unedited five-minute tape filmed in front of a live audience, and a panel of anonymous third-party judges grades every video on joke quality, stage presence, audience response and professionalism. Raleigh's 2027 submissions close on 15 November 2026, and every comic hears back by 10 January 2027. Montclair Comedy Festival in New Jersey has a selection committee of more than 10 comedians, producers and community members who rate each video. West End Comedy Fest in Atlanta has its panel watch three minutes of a tape, and its comics must be 21. SF Sketchfest takes demo reels of up to 20 minutes, filmed live.

Juries, invitations and contests

Some festivals mix an open call with direct booking. The Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival fills most of its line-up through juried selection by an independent programming committee and invites a smaller group of acts itself; most of its shows pair two acts of about 30 minutes each. Winnipeg Comedy Festival casts themed TV shows, so comics email sets of 8 to 10 minutes aimed at a named theme, and it expects at least five years of stand-up; its 2027 call closes on 31 October 2026. Boston Comedy Festival runs a contest instead: 96 comedians play eight preliminary rounds for 32 semifinal places and $7,000 in prize money, with the final on 14 November 2026.

At a fringe, registration replaces selection

Fringes skip the audition. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe has no central selection process and invites no one; a comic needs an agreement with a venue before registering a show. Venues there decide which shows they host, so the real negotiation is with a venue. Brighton Fringe works the same way: the artist, or sometimes the venue, registers the event online through Eventotron. Brighton Fringe registrations for 2027 opened on 14 October 2026, with a final deadline of 30 April 2027, and anyone who registers and pays is in the programme.
