Can children go to comedy festivals?
Often, yes, but it depends on the show. Plenty of festival shows are for adults only, and some events set an age floor, such as 16 or older at Fastball in Mesa, Arizona. Many festivals also run comedy for children: Nottingham, Brighton Dome, Galway, Sydney and Perth list kids' or family shows, and the Edinburgh Fringe has a children's section.
Age limits are set show by show
At most festivals the age limit belongs to each show, not to the festival. The NZ International Comedy Festival says each show sets its own restriction, enforced by venue staff, and some bar venues are strictly R18. Adelaide Fringe and FRINGE WORLD use G, PG, M, MA15+ and 18+ ratings that artists choose themselves, and at FRINGE WORLD an 18+ show admits no one under 18. Nottingham Comedy Festival labels each 2026 show with an age, from 3+ to 18+. Montclair Comedy Festival says most of its shows are for adults and the language can be blue. Fastball Comedy Festival at Sloan Park in Mesa, Arizona admits only fans aged 16 or older.
Shows made for children
Several festivals programme for children. Nottingham Comedy Festival opens its 2026 line-up with a kids show by Benny Shakes, for ages 3 and up, on 30 October 2026. The Brighton Dome Comedy Festival (16 to 25 October 2026) has Komedia's Comedy Club 4 Kids, Shelf's The Kids Show 2, a swear-free showcase for ages 11 and up, and free comedy workshops for 11 to 16 year olds. Galway Comedy Festival has Spencer Jones: The Experimental Kids Show on 25 October 2026. Sydney Comedy Festival has run a Kids and Family Day with a clean showcase open to all ages, Vail Comedy Festival has staged a free magic show for kids, and Perth Comedy Festival lists kids comedy in its mix. The 2026 Edinburgh Fringe had 127 children's shows.
Before booking with children
Check the rating on each show's page, since ratings are often set by the artists. Adelaide Fringe notes that artists rate their own shows, that it cannot guarantee content, and that tickets for an unsuitable show are not exchanged or refunded. Licensed venues add their own rules: at FRINGE WORLD some licensed areas admit under-18s only with a responsible adult. Third Coast Improv Fest in Nashville admits all ages but warns that many shows carry adult content, and the Mobile Improv Comedy Carnival marks shows as General Audiences or Mature Audiences. Brighton Fringe sells family tickets for some shows, and at Adelaide Fringe most shows let children of 24 months and under in free if they do not take a seat.
