How many shows are at the Edinburgh Fringe?

The short answer

The 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, its 79th edition, had 4,232 shows from 77 countries, giving 61,277 performances across 306 venues, by the Fringe Society's closing count. By 11:30 on the last day, 31 August 2026, 2,805,395 tickets had been issued, a figure that leaves out free and non-ticketed shows.

The 2026 count

The Fringe Society's closing figures for 2026, the 79th Edinburgh Festival Fringe, list 4,232 shows from 77 countries, giving 61,277 performances across 306 venues over 25 days. By 11:30 on 31 August 2026, the last day, 2,805,395 tickets had been issued, an 8% rise on 2025. That number excludes free and non-ticketed shows, so the real audience was larger. The busiest day was Saturday 15 August 2026, with over 164,000 tickets issued, the Fringe's highest single-day attendance on record.

Why the counts differ

Edinburgh Fringe figures depend on when they are taken. At the programme launch on 4 June 2026 the Fringe Society counted 3,649 shows across 258 venues, making up 53,884 performances. Shows can keep registering right up to and even during the festival, so by the close the totals had grown to 4,232 shows and 306 venues. When comparing years, set a closing figure against a closing figure.

Beyond the ticketed shows

The ticketed programme is only part of the Edinburgh Fringe. In 2026, 334 street performers, buskers and street artists performed on the Royal Mile and the Mound Precinct as part of the Fringe Street Events. The Fringe Society counted 120 accessible venue spaces, with 62% of all shows wheelchair accessible. The 80th Fringe runs from 6 to 30 August 2027.
