Big Pine's past bills

Big Pine's earlier bills include Jim Breuer, Marsha Warfield, Jamie Kennedy, Andrew Dice Clay and Matt Rife, beside the comics picked from submissions. Its home, Mic Drop Comedy Chandler, at 51 E. Boston St., keeps the whole festival within a few blocks of downtown Chandler's coffee shops, restaurants and late-night food. To enter, a comic sends an unedited five-minute stand-up video, with no intro, crowd work or edits, and a short bio, for a fee of $22 rising to $37 as the deadline nears. Accepted comics under 18 may be in the venues only by day or for their own set, with a legal guardian at their side throughout. Visiting industry guests have included Nick Harris of Netflix, the SXSW Comedy founder Charlie Sotelo and Abbey Robertson of New York Comedy Club.

Tucson by bus and streetcar

From Tucson International Airport, Sun Tran's route 25 runs north to the Laos Transit Center and on up Park Avenue into downtown, reaching 6th Avenue and Pennington Street in about 40 minutes. On weekdays it leaves every half hour from 4:10am to 7:40pm, then hourly until 11:40pm, from a stop on the first island across the road from baggage claim. A taxi from the airport starts at $7 plus $3 a mile, with a $20 minimum. Sun Tran buses and the Sun Link streetcar cost nothing to ride, as the Mayor and Council have directed, and the streetcar's 3.9-mile line has 23 stops linking the University of Arizona, Main Gate Square, Fourth Avenue, downtown and Mercado San Agustín. The festival's theater is at 414 East 9th Street.

Flying into Phoenix

At Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport the free PHX Sky Train links the terminals, the Rental Car Center and the economy parking areas with Valley Metro Rail's station at 44th and Washington streets, whose trains reach Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. From 5am to 10pm a train comes every three and a half to seven minutes on average; nightly maintenance can stretch the wait to 15 minutes or more. Rail tickets are sold at kiosks on Level 2 of the 44th Street station. A taxi costs a $20 flat rate between the airport and downtown Phoenix, and elsewhere $7 for the first mile and $2.60 for each one after, with an $18 minimum, whatever the number of passengers or bags.
